What is graphic design?
Most people having an understanding of what graphic design is… from logo design, to designing magazine ads and posters, but design is so much more. Design is everywhere, it’s all around you. The role of a graphic designer is to produce graphics for printed and digital media and present that information in a way that is visually appealing, informative and easy to digest. This is achieved through five universal design principles – balance, hierarchy, contrast, repetition and alignment.
Communication skills are important – a graphic designer must be able to listen and assess the clients needs to produce concepts that are not only visually appealing, but are well-researched and functional. A graphic designer must understand the behaviours of the particular target audience in order to create an effective design solution.
A graphic designer might also be skilled in illustration, type setting, printing, photography, video and animation. A graphic designer uses industry standard software such as Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. As part of a successful design solution, a graphic designer should also be able to analyse and apply colour effectively. For colour management, graphic designers use Pantone Matching System (PMS) colour books and monitor and printer calibration tools.
